The Veterinary Department of the Astrakhan region adopted a resolution according to which stray dogs can be euthanized without quarantine, during which, according to the previous version of the resolution, animals caught on the street had to be examined, conclusions made about their health, aggressiveness or lack thereof, and then either sent to a shelter. or euthanasia.

Also, dogs whose height at the withers is higher than 40 centimeters, breeds prohibited in Russia and their crossbreeds, as well as sick and injured animals will now be immediately sent for euthanasia.

In July of last year, the State Duma of Russia gave the regional authorities the right to independently decide what to do with homeless animals: to continue implementing the federal OSVV program (Catching – Sterilization – Vaccination – Return), to keep them in shelters for life or to kill them after 30 days of detention.

Animal rights activists, public and cultural figures actively opposed the draft law. Protest actions were held in dozens of Russian cities, in Moscow protesters gathered several times near the presidential administration building. More than 136 thousand people signed the petition against the law. However, to date, laws allowing the killing of animals have already been adopted in Buryatia, the Altai Republic, Magadan and Astrakhan regions, Tuva and the Trans-Baikal region.
