Journalists confirmed the names of 285 Ukrainian children taken to the Russian Federation

Journalists of “Vazhnyh istoriy” and “Vyorstky” confirmed the identities of 285 children taken by Russia from regions of the Donbass not controlled by Kyiv. The Russian authorities do not report on the fate of the children, since 2014 there has been no complete information about them in Ukraine, according to the investigation.

Journalists claim that 263 questionnaires of Ukrainian children from Donbass appeared in the database of orphans in October and November 2022, shortly after Russia announced the annexation of parts of the territories of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine.

Abducted children were placed in institutions in at least 15 Russian regions – the majority in the Oryol, Nizhny Novgorod and Rostov regions.

Earlier, Important Histories calculated that by the summer of last year, the database of orphans had increased by two thousand and 400 questionnaires for the first time in six years. But it is impossible to claim that all these children were taken out of their Ukrainian regions, according to the investigators.

In most questionnaires studied by journalists, it is indicated that children can be adopted. These data contradict the statements of Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian Commissioner for the Rights of the Child.

According to the published questionnaires, the Russians had the opportunity to adopt at least 214 deported Ukrainian children whose parents died or were deprived of parental rights. Another 71 children can only be taken under guardianship. These are children whose parents are in the colony, their rights are restricted, or their whereabouts are unknown. “Important Histories” and “Vörstke” do not know whether children from the data bank are actually given up for adoption.
