Kazan sociologist Yasaveev was charged with inciting hatred

In Kazan, an administrative case was opened against Doctor of Sociological Sciences and publicist Iskander Yasaveev. The prosecutor’s office saw signs of “incitement to hatred” in his column published in Idel.Realii. This was reported by Yasaveev himself on his Facebook.

The column “Boyish or Soviet-style: Why is Russia at war?” was published last summer. In it, the scientist analyzes the logic of the actions of the Russian leadership in Ukraine and the connection of this logic with the criminal culture of Soviet times.

Yasaveev said that the decision to initiate the case was handed to him in the “E” center (department for countering extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), where he was released under the pretext of returning the items seized during the search last year. In the resolution, the prosecutor’s office refers to the linguistic examination of Yasaveev’s article, which found in the text “signs of humiliation of human dignity on the basis of social (professional) affiliation, incitement of enmity, hatred towards a group of persons.” The author himself does not agree with this.

  • Iskander Yasaveev has been collaborating with Idel.Realii for several years, publishing articles on the sociology of Russian society. After the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, he spoke out condemning the war and took part in anti-war pickets. In August 2022, he and several other publicists and journalists of Idel.Realia were searched.
  • In October, the Ministry of Justice added Yasaveev to the register of media “foreign agents”. Three days later, the scientist was fired from the St. Petersburg branch of the Higher School of Economics, where he taught.
