The current head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, was re-elected for a second term.

Bulgarian citizen Georgieva, who has headed the IMF since 2019, was the only applicant. Her candidacy was unanimously approved by the members of the IMF Council. Georgieva’s new five-year term will begin on October 1, 2024.

“In making this decision, the Council highly appreciated the strong and flexible leadership of Mrs. Georgieva during her tenure in office, when she overcame a number of serious global shocks,” the IMF statement said.

Among other things, Georgieva led the IMF through the pandemic, approved more than $360 billion in new financing for 97 countries, and eased the debt burden of the poorest states. Also, under her leadership, in 2023, the IMF approved an aid package to Ukraine in the amount of 15.6 billion dollars – the first time for a country in a state of war, the Financial Times notes.

Commenting on the re-election, Georgieva said that she was “deeply grateful for the trust and support” given to her by the council.
