The Southern District Military Court of Rostov-on-Don sentenced a 36-year-old resident of Simferopol to 10 years in a penal colony, accused by the Russian authorities of preparing sabotage on the railway in the Dzhankoy district of Crimea annexed by Russia. This is reported by RIA “Novosti” with reference to the press service of the FSB regional office. The department did not specify under which articles the Crimean was found guilty.

A resident of Simferopol, whose name and surname have not been disclosed, was detained in April 2022. During the search, they allegedly found two improvised explosive devices, a scheme for laying explosives under the railway track, as well as “extremist literature”.

According to the special service, he was preparing to detonate railway tracks in order to “intimidate the population of Russia, cause significant property damage, and also influence decision-making by the authorities of Russia.” In addition, according to the FSB, the Crimean called for terrorist attacks against the Russian authorities of the Ukrainian peninsula and the murder of Russians.

According to “Mediazona” estimates, by mid-April, the Russian authorities reported the detention of at least 66 people in connection with railway sabotage in more than 21 regions of Russia. A third of them are minors, almost all the rest are under 25 years old.

  • In December 2022, the State Duma passed a law providing for punishment up to life imprisonment for “assisting in subversive activities.”
