Latvia, on the instructions of the UN, began to send from the country sanctions-free fertilizers to the Russian Federation

On behalf of the UN World Food Program, a cargo of Russian mineral fertilizers subject to EU sanctions left the port of Riga for Kenya.

This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, “European Truth” writes.

This is the first shipment of approximately 200,000 tons of Russian-made mineral fertilizers that belong to companies under EU sanctions and are stored in Latvia.

The UN World Food Program plans to export several more shipments of mineral fertilizers from Latvia, which are currently subject to sanctions, in order to provide support to the countries that need these products the most.

On December 6, 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia adopted a corresponding decision in response to the appeal of the United Nations to reduce the negative consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine and to help overcome the food crisis in Africa and Latin America.

The Government of Latvia has decided to facilitate the transfer, with the support of the World Food Program of the United Nations, of mineral fertilizers belonging to companies under the sanctions of the European Union.

We will remind, the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaia Kallas considers it wrong to talk about the easing of sanctionsas required by Russia for the export of its fertilizers and grain.

Meanwhile, Latvia does not support relaxation restrictions on the export of fertilizers from Belarus by applying an exception to the sanctions of the European Union.
