Russian lawyers have written an open letter to President Vladimir Putin demanding that he stop bullying opposition leader Alexei Navalny. They called the conditions of his detention torture, reports the Telegram channel “We can explain” with reference to the lawyer Viktor Drozdov.
“Today, we cannot and do not have the right to calmly look at the violation of constitutional rights and the reduction of human dignity of our colleague, who was deprived of the status of a lawyer due to his criminal prosecution against the background of his active political activity in Russia,” says the appeal.
The authors of the statement consider Navalny’s ten-fold placement in a detention center “torturous”, as it “creates a direct threat to his life”. Lawyers also demanded that civilian doctors be admitted to politics.
- On December 31, Navalny, who is serving a term in a high-security prison in the Vladimir Region, was sent to a detention center for the tenth time. In SHIZO, Navalny fell ill with ARVI, and the drugs bought by his associates could only be given after the Russian doctors wrote an open letter to Putin.
- They needed to stop bullying Navalny and provide him with the necessary medical care. Their appeal was transferred to the Federal Service for Execution of Sentences (FSIN).
- Since June 2022, Navalny has been in the Vladimir colony of strict regime. Additional punishments were imposed on him after he announced the creation of a trade union of prisoners in August and began to challenge the conditions of his detention. Among the reasons for which Navalny was sent to the SHIZO were an unbuttoned button, refusal to wash the fence, lack of a jacket, obscene language, washing not according to the schedule.
