The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) has abandoned the earlier decision to make the study of the Chinese language compulsory for students. Information about this is posted on the university’s website. The decision was made after student protests. Students who are currently learning Chinese will be able to continue studying the program.
Earlier, MIPT students said that they were forced to sign up for a Chinese language course. At the same time, Spanish, German, and French have disappeared from the MIPT program, and it is impossible to enroll in a new course.
The press service of the university then explained that MIPT is discussing the formats and scope of the introduction of the Chinese language as a requirement for graduates to be able to read technical documentation and scientific publications.
On Friday, the management of MIPT stated that it still considers the study of Chinese as a mandatory second (after English) foreign language to be a “timely and promising” solution. However, the university emphasized, “the joint development of a consolidated opinion on the formats and volumes of teaching with the student community has reached a dead end.” The rectory decided to return to the previous program of teaching foreign languages.
