On March 2, on the second day after the funeral of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, people continue to bring flowers to his grave at the Borysovsky cemetery in the southeast of Moscow.

Some also bring notes with words addressed to Navalny.

Navalny’s mother and his wife Yulia came to the cemetery again today.

No fewer than 13,000 people took part in the farewell to Navalny the day before, and, apparently, significantly more. This was reported on Saturday by the independent project “White Counter”, which is engaged in counting the number of participants in mass events.

According to the project’s estimates, on March 1, no less than 16,500 people passed through the Brateevsky bridge from the church of the icon of the Mother of God “Soothe my sorrows”, where Navalny was laid to rest, to the cemetery where he was buried, in an hour and a half after the funeral. The White Accountant emphasizes that the total number of those who came to say goodbye to Navalny is obviously higher, since some people came only to the church, and some only to the cemetery. “Only this calculation cuts off all “estimates” that give the maximum peak and even more so the total number of participants of less than 12-13 thousand, as unscrupulous,” notes the “White Account”. The day before, the pro-Kremlin publication “Ridovka” estimated the number of participants in the farewell at 12 thousand, calling it small. Even some of Navalny’s opponents disagreed with this assessment.

Many people who came to say goodbye to Navalny the day before chanted anti-war and anti-Putin slogans. Participants of non-coordinated actions are usually detained for this, however, on March 1, the number of detainees in Moscow was small – according to OVD-Info, 14 people.

Among them was the activist Alexander Myslenkov. According to reports, a policeman approached him and demanded to show his phone, and after Myslenkov delayed complying with the demand, the activist, according to eyewitnesses, was hit twice in the solar plexus by the policemen. On Saturday, the court fined Myslenkova 50,000 rubles – he was accused of the so-called discrediting of the army.

Also on Saturday, the court in Moscow ordered the administrative arrest for 15 days to Pavlo Zelenskyi, the former operator of the Anti-Corruption Fund, who was detained the day before at Navalny’s farewell. Ego was accused of violating the rules for holding rallies. Zelensky was previously convicted of inciting extremism for a tweet about the self-immolation of journalist Iryna Slavina. He was kept in a pre-trial detention center for some time, then he was sentenced to two years in prison. Zelensky began to cooperate with the investigation and testified against the former coordinator of Navalny’s headquarters in Ufa, Lilia Chanysheva, and the former coordinator of Navalny’s headquarters in Tomsk, Ksenia Fadeeva. As noted by “Mediazona”, after the release of Pavlo Zelenskyi, administrative supervision was established for him, the violation of which may result in criminal prosecution.

  • Alexey Navalny, according to official data, died on February 16 in a special regime colony in the Arctic village of Harp. Navalny’s associates believe that he was killed and blame him for the death of President Vladimir Putin. Thousands of Muscovites came to the funeral, and in dozens of Russian cities, local residents brought flowers to natural memorials. Actions in memory of Navalny were also held in the cities of many countries around the world.
