Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, commented on the sound of the siren, which Ukrainian journalists included during his speech at the Global Media Forum.
“Standing on the platform, I thought that this was a technical problem. No, it was not a technical problem. If I had known, I would have interrupted my speech and asked for the sound of the siren to be amplified. The world must hear this sound of war, and any place is appropriate for this,” — “Novaya Gazeta Evropa” quotes Muratov’s message.
The editor-in-chief clarified that he understands the actions of Ukrainians and has no complaints against the organizers.
“Novaya gazeta Evropa” publishes Muratov’s speech at the forum. In it, among other things, he noted that Russia and Ukraine will never be together again. In addition, according to the journalist, Russia has ceased to be Europe. “The window to Europe is closed, and bars are installed on it,” says the text of the speech.
Commenting on the lack of mass actions against the war with Ukraine, Muratov drew attention to modern Russian legislation, according to which anti-war activists face criminal prosecution. “600 political prisoners are in prisons. 20 thousand cases against supporters of peace. 300 non-state media are closed. There is not a single deputy in the parliament who advocates peace. But the people who are in prisons should command our respect, compassion and desire to help,” said Muratov.
- Before the opening of the media forum, the publication Deutsche Welle, under the patronage of which the event took place, reported that Muratov’s participation in it caused some critical comments from the Ukrainian side in social networks.
- According to Deutsche Welle, the participants who turned on the sound of the siren wanted to remind about the incessant Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
