New earthquakes occurred on the border between Turkey and Syria

Two new earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.4 and 5.8 occurred on Monday in the south of Turkey, not far from the border with Syria. No casualties have been reported, but there is destruction and suffering. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the vicinity of the city of Antakya – the administrative center of the Turkish province of Hatay.

As a result of underground tremors, electricity was cut off in the entire province of Hatay. Many buildings were damaged. According to the Turkish authorities, eight wounded were hospitalized. The mayor of the city of Hatay said that there may be people under the rubble. Rescue services are working on the ground. There were no reported casualties at the time of publishing the news.

The Turkish authorities warned residents of the affected regions adjacent to the sea that there is no risk of a tsunami, but the water level may rise to 50 centimeters, and they advised to stay away from the coastline.

Tremors were also felt in the territories of Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan. “Al-Jazeera” reports that in Syria there are also collapsed buildings in the city of Aleppo, and people may be under the rubble.

Aftershocks were felt throughout the evening of Monday in the affected areas. Seismologists cannot guarantee that they will not continue.

• On the night of February 6, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria. The number of victims exceeded 45 thousand people. Tens of thousands of residents of the affected cities were left homeless, thousands of buildings, including hospitals, schools and apartment buildings, were destroyed. A state of emergency has been declared in Turkey for three months.
