North Korea claims that its spy satellite took pictures of the White House

North Korea’s intelligence satellite took pictures of the White House, the Pentagon and American aircraft carriers at the Norfolk Naval Base, North Korea’s state media reports. There is no independent confirmation of this information.

It is reported that the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, looked at satellite images on Tuesday.

Last week, North Korea announced the successful launch of its first intelligence satellite, which it says was designed to monitor the military movements of the United States and South Korea. Since then, the state media reported on satellite images of cities and military bases in South Korea and Italy.

As Reuters notes, Pyongyang has not yet published any images taken by the satellite. South Korea said that the capabilities of the North Korean satellite could not be verified. The representative of the US Ministry of Defense could not confirm to TASS the veracity of the reports that the North Korean intelligence satellite took pictures of the White House and the Pentagon.

The US and South Korea condemned the launch of the satellite and called it a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Earlier this year, North Korea tried twice to put its reconnaissance satellite into orbit – both attempts were unsuccessful. In September, after a meeting with Kim Jong-un, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would help the DPRK with the construction of satellites.

On November 23, the intelligence agency of South Korea informed the deputies at a closed briefing that, most likely, the satellite of North Korea was successfully launched into orbit thanks to the help of Russia. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, refuted the information about North Korea’s assistance with the launch of the satellite. According to her, accusations of “allegedly illegal military-technological or military-technical cooperation with the DPRK do not have any evidence.”

According to the UN resolution, which Russia supported, states are prohibited from assisting the DPRK in the development of technologies that Pyongyang can use in ballistic missiles.
