Norway will increase funding for Ukrainian refugees

The government of Norway will increase the funds available for the settlement of refugees fleeing from Ukraine, as it expects that the number of asylum seekers arriving in the country will be greater than previously predicted. This is reported by thelocal.no.

In the updated budget for 2023, which will be fully announced later in May, the government will allocate more money to refugees from Ukraine.
“We appealed to the municipalities to accommodate a total of 35,000 refugees in 2023. But the latest forecasts indicate that there may be even more of them. That’s why we need to resettle more refugees,” Minister of Labor and Social Integration Marte Møs Persen said on Norwegian news channel NTB.
How many refugees are expected
According to the new forecast, Norway may be forced to accommodate up to 43,000 refugees. Therefore, the government offers to increase the financing of a number of destinations.
Financing
First, it will provide municipalities with an additional 50,000 kroner (about 4,200 euros) for each refugee they accommodate. It is expected that by the end of 2024 it will cost the country 200 million crowns (about 17 million euros). This money will add to the funding that local authorities receive for housing refugees.
At the same time, by the end of 2024, 459 million kroner (over 38 million euros) will be allocated for Norwegian language training for refugees.

“It is important that the municipalities that settle refugees should also be able to support them when they go to work. Many people need more than the one-year Norwegian education they receive today. The study will be extended by six months, so that it will be 18 months in total,” Mös Persen said.
Courses are offered to be planned so that Ukrainians can combine them with work.
The Norwegian government will also allocate about 180 million kroner (15 million euros) for repeated subsidies for housing rent for refugees.
