The OPEC group has banned several media groups from attending its production meeting in Vienna this weekend. This move was initiated by Saudi Arabia, which is trying to support oil prices.
This is reported by the Financial Times with reference to sources.
Journalists from Reuters, Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal were denied invitations to the Vienna headquarters of OPEC+.
OPEC intends to meet with Russia on Sunday, June 4, to agree on oil production policy for the second half of the year.
The publication notes that the media ban is unusual for OPEC, as headlines from its meetings can affect oil prices and financial markets around the world. Especially at a time when the world economy is struggling with inflation.
No reason was given for the exclusion of the media groups, but people familiar with the decision said it was initiated by Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, Prince Abdelaziz bin Salman, who has come under considerable pressure to raise oil prices.
The media, which is banned from the event, is expected to send reporters to Vienna, even though they will not have access to the OPEC secretariat.
