Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia demanded that the authorities of Belarus immediately withdraw from the country all fighters of PMC “Wagner” stationed there. This was announced at a press conference by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Poland, Mariusz Kaminski. On Monday morning, a meeting of the heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Poland and the Baltic countries was held in Warsaw, dedicated to the situation in Belarus.
Kaminsky stated that the presence of several thousand “Wagnerians” in Belarus poses a danger both for the citizens of the country and for the entire region. According to the minister, the neighbors of Belarus do not rule out “incidents of a military nature” with the participation of mercenaries. In this case, Kaminsky said, Poland and the Baltic countries are ready to completely close the borders with Belarus.
In addition, Kaminsky pointed out that the number of illegal migrants trying to enter the territory of the European Union has increased recently on the borders of Belarus. The ministers also demand that the Lukashenko regime return them to their countries of origin and not exacerbate the migration crisis.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Lithuania, Agne Bilotaite, said that the countries have agreed on a unified response in case of recording critical incidents. Vilnius is now considering the possibility of closing two more border crossings between Belarus and Lithuania: Lavorishkes and Raigardas. Since August 18, Lithuania has already closed two of the six checkpoints on the Belarusian border, Shumskas and Tveriachyus.
- Mercenaries of PMC “Wagner” began to arrive in Belarus after the demand for rebellion in Russia at the end of June. The Belarusian authorities have announced that they will train the Belarusian military. Wagner soldiers arrive in Belarus without heavy armored vehicles. Their main camp is located in the Mogilev region.
- Poland and the Baltic countries are taking measures to strengthen border protection with Belarus. Poland is building additional defense structures there and increasing its military presence. The country intends to increase the number of border guards to 10,000. The Border Service of Latvia has announced the transition to an enhanced regime. The agency announced the growing number of requests for illegal border crossing and accused the Belarusian regime of trying to destabilize the situation.
