Alexander Lukashenko reported that the founder of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin is in Belarusian territory, BelTA news agency reports.
“As I promised, if you want to transfer to us for a while and so on, we will help you,” Lukashenko said at the ceremony of handing over epaulettes to senior officers in Minsk. Lukashenko clarified that the PMC will pay for its presence in the country independently.
The Belarusian authoritarian leader also noted that the head of the country’s Ministry of Defense, Viktor Khrenin, was interested in cooperation with units of PMC “Wagner”. “I agree. Talk to them,” added Lukashenko.
Earlier today, it became known that the business jet used by Prigozhin had landed at the Machulyshchi military airfield near Minsk, but there was no confirmation that the head of the PMC was on board. On Saturday, the representative of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, said that Prigozhin himself would “go to Belarus”.
- On Friday, June 23, the founder of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin reported on alleged rocket attacks on the rear of “Wagner” by the Russian regular army. After that, he announced that 25 thousand “Wagner” fighters are going on an armed campaign to Moscow in order to bring the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of Russia to justice.
- Within a day, PMC “Wagner” columns actually managed to take control of Rostov-on-Don and military facilities in Voronezh.
- By Saturday evening, after negotiations between Prigozhin and the authoritarian leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, the advance of the “Wagner” columns towards Moscow was stopped.
- On Monday, June 26, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, in his address to the Russians, said that the PMC fighters tried to use the dark. At the same time, Putin thanked the mercenaries who “made the only correct decision” and “stopped at the last ditch.” He suggested that they conclude a contract with the Ministry of Defense of Russia, return to their relatives or go to Belarus.
