Proponents of aid to Ukraine are discussing a new large package in the Senate

American senators from both leading parties, advocating further support for Ukraine, declare their intention as soon as possible to achieve the adoption of an annual aid package to Kyiv in the amount of $50 billion to $100 billion.
The Wall Street Journal writes about this, noting that the package discussed by pro-Ukrainian senators far exceeds the amount of aid requested by President Joe Biden in August, and is designed for the presidential elections in the United States in November 2024.
The newspaper reminds that in the summer the head of the White House requested additional aid in the amount of $24 billion, which caused resistance from many Republicans. In this regard, the Wall Street Journal writes, among other things, about the growing pressure on the Republican Party from voters who are dissatisfied with new war spending.
According to many senators advocating the continuation of financial and military aid to Kyiv to repel Russian aggression, the adoption of a large package of measures will be a powerful signal to other countries that the chaos in the House of Representatives will not affect the long-term commitment of the United States to its obligations towards Ukraine. Proponents of aid allocation also believe that it would be easier to secure support for one large package for Ukraine than several smaller transfers.
In early October, a group of conservative Republicans managed to oust their fellow party member, Kevin McCarthy, from the post of speaker of the House of Representatives. This happened for the first time in the history of the country. The vote took place a few days after the Congress approved a temporary budget for 45 days, which did not allocate funds to help Ukraine. Right-wing Republicans accused McCarthy of preparing an agreement with Biden on the allocation of such aid, which they do not agree with.
In connection with the latest events in Israel and the Gaza Strip, where members of the radical Palestinian group Hamas began large-scale armed actions against the Jewish state on October 7, the Wall Street Journal writes that it is not yet clear how this attack can change the opinion of legislators about aid to Ukraine. The unexpected attack by Hamas caused a shock in Washington and has already redirected the attention of the US to help a key ally in the Middle East, the newspaper writes.
