Vladimir Putin signed a decree that allows the deportation of local residents who have not adopted Russian citizenship from the annexed Ukrainian territories. The document is published on the official Internet portal of legal information.
According to the decree, citizens of Ukraine living in the annexed territories must either become citizens of Russia or officially refuse to do so. Those who choose the second option will be considered foreigners from July 1, 2024.
Residents of regions occupied by Russia may also be subject to deportation if they “create a threat to national security, advocate a violent change in the foundations of the constitutional system, finance terrorist and extremist activities, or participate in unauthorized actions.”
- Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russia has annexed the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine, declaring them its territories. At the same time, a significant part of these areas is controlled by the Ukrainian military, and the city of Kherson was liberated by the Armed Forces after the Russian authorities formalized its annexation.
