Putin signed a law on confiscation of property under a number of criminal articles

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, signed a law on the confiscation of property of those convicted of a number of articles, including fakes about the Russian army. The corresponding decree is published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

The bill was submitted to the State Duma on January 22, and unanimously adopted on January 31. On February 7, it was approved by the Federation Council.

Now the authorities will be able to confiscate “money, valuables and other property” if they were used or intended for “activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation.”

The law enumerates several articles under which property can be confiscated from convicted persons. Among them are the spread of so-called fakes about the Russian army, desertion, failure to comply with an order, participation in an undesirable organization, as well as “public appeals directed against the security of the state.” Most of these articles were added to the Criminal Code or tightened after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodyn, the adopted decision “will allow to punish those who conduct activities against their country, to leave these scoundrels with honorary titles, and also to confiscate their property, money and other valuables.”

Earlier, LDPR deputy Andrey Lugovoi spoke in the same vein. “Anyone who tries to harm the family will be left with nothing and will die there, outside of our country, like the last dog,” he explained the meaning of the draft law.

At the same time, the Criminal Code provides that only property obtained as a result of the commission of a crime or used for its commission can be confiscated.

  • Russian courts recognize reports about the war in Ukraine that do not coincide with the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia as fakes.
  • According to “OVD-Info” estimates, at least 830 people have been prosecuted for their anti-war stance in Russia, including at least 250 against them in an article about fakes about the Russian army.
