Roskomnadzor banned more than 200 sites under the law on “LGBT propaganda”

Roskomnadzor added more than 200 LGBT+ sites to the register of prohibited information in less than a month. This follows from the words of a representative of Roskomnadzor, to whom “Vedomosti” refers.

The law on the complete prohibition of “propaganda” of homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism in Russia entered into force on December 5, 2022. At the end of December, Roskomnadzor received the right to enter sites with such information into the register of prohibited ones.

According to the information of the source “Vedomosti”, after this Roskomnadzor began to add many times more sites about LGBT+ to the list. If in the first three weeks of December, Roskomnadzor identified 79 sites with similar topics, then in the next three weeks, one of which fell on the New Year holidays, there were already 227.

Sites included in the prohibited register must remove “illegal content”, otherwise they will be blocked. The law also provides for an administrative fine of up to 400,000 rubles for individuals and up to five million for legal entities, if the court considers information about LGBT+ published on the Internet, mass media, books, films or advertising to be “propaganda”.

Even at the drafting stage of the bill, lawyers noted that the so-called “LGBT propaganda law” does not have a clear definition of propaganda and it could lead to the banning of any mention of LGBT+.

One of the authors of the law, a member of the State Duma, Aleksandr Khinshtein, told “Vedomosti” that the authorities are now explaining to market participants that it is considered “LGBT propaganda” and that it is a “demonstration”, which is prohibited in Russia only for minors.
