The Committee of the State Duma on physical culture and sports is preparing a bill according to which Russian athletes will be obliged to pay in the event of a change of sports citizenship. This is reported by TASS.

The draft law specifies that if an athlete who is or was a candidate for the Russian national team is registered by a sports federation of another country to participate in international competitions, he will be obliged to pay compensation to the Russian organization that “trained him”.

The Ministry of Sport of Russia will have to calculate the exact amount of the expenses of Russian coaches and sports clubs for the preparation of champions.

Chairman of the State Duma committee on physical culture and sports, Dmitry Svishchev, commented on the initiative: “This is our taxpayers’ money, which should not be wasted.”

  • After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the International Olympic Committee and many sports federations imposed sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus. They are not allowed to participate in international competitions, or they are allowed to participate in them only under a neutral flag. In this regard, more than 200 Russian athletes have chosen to change their sports citizenship.
