The Reuters agency obtained access to a closed document of the Russian government, which shows that Russia has already spent the entire approved military budget for 2023, and therefore decided to double spending on the army.
By information Reuters, the document contains data on the distribution of budget expenditures in the defense sector, which have not been published since the beginning of the war.
“The figures shed light on Russia’s war spending at a time when data on the sector’s budget spending is no longer published. Russia has doubled defense spending by 2023 to more than $100 billion, a third of all government spending,” the agency reported.
In the first six months, Russia spent “on defense” 5.59 trillion rubles, or 12% more than was predicted for the entire year 2023, the agency writes. This is 37.3% (according to the plan it was 17.1%) of the total budget expenditures for the six months (14.97 trillion rubles) and 19.2% of the entire annual budget.
Almost all (97.1%) of the increase in budget expenditures fell on the production of weapons, the army and related articles. Such a high share of military spending in Russia has not been seen for more than ten years, and, most likely, even more. It reached a maximum of 23%.
At the same time, the law on the budget for 2023 included 4.91 trillion rubles under the article “national defense” – 1.5 times more than the year before.
We remind you:
Level secret expenses in the Russian budget became a record in 2022.
According to the results of January-May 2023, the classified expenditures of the federal budget of Russia increased almost 10 times compared to last year.
