Russia must withdraw from South Ossetia and Abkhazia

The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, said that Russia should return to Georgia the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which came under the de facto control of Russia in 2008. In her opinion, Russia is losing the war in Ukraine, and after its end, not only the occupied Ukrainian territories, but also the Georgian ones should leave.
Zurabishvili’s words are quoted by the Bloomberg agency: “Russia has almost lost all battles, if not the entire war. Georgian issues must also be on the negotiating table. Russia must learn where its borders are.”
The President called on the Western community to demand from Russian President Vladimir Putin the withdrawal of troops from the former Georgian territories as one of the conditions of a peace agreement with Ukraine. Otherwise, she believes, the West will make a big mistake, as in 2008 and 2014.”
- South Ossetia and Abkhazia were part of the Georgian SSR until 1990. In 1990, both territories declared independence, which Georgia did not recognize. In 2008, after the “five-day war” with Georgia, Russia stationed its troops on the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia recognized the independence of these republics, but only four UN member states – Venezuela, Nauru, Nicaragua and Syria – agree with it. Georgia considers these territories its own, occupied by Russia.
