Russia planned to start air communication with Abkhazia, a republic whose independence from Georgia is recognized by only a few countries in the world. An agreement was signed in St. Petersburg on the resumption of work at the Sukhum airport. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development.
The document was signed on June 16 in St. Petersburg, at an economic forum organized by the Kremlin. It is assumed that the airport will be restored by the end of 2024 at the expense of a Russian private investor. They became the “Bazovyy element” group, which manages three airports on the territory of Russia, reports Echo of the Caucasus.
The Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maksym Reshetnikov stated that the restoration of direct air traffic between Russia and Abkhazia is part of Moscow’s strategy for the development of tourism. Georgia did not comment on the agreement. From the point of view of Tbilisi, Abkhazia is a Georgian territory occupied by Russia.
The airport in Sukhumi is not recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization – ICAO. The sky over Abkhazia cannot be opened without the permission of the Georgian authorities. However, several airports in the world operate in this mode – for example, the Ercan airport near Nicosia, which is located on the territory of Northern Cyprus, recognized as an independent state only by Turkey.
