Russian journalists spoke out against the persecution of Favorskaya

[ad_1]

Journalists of Russian independent publications issued an open letter against the persecution of the free press. The reason for it was the arrest on Friday of SOTAvision correspondent Anastasia Favorskaya. The appeal will be sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and the President of the European Commission, Ursule von der Leyen.

In the appeal, journalists and human rights activists call the persecution of Favorskaya and her colleagues one of the symptoms of the aggravation of the anti-democratic regime in Russia. They emphasize that the very journalistic work of covering topics sensitive to the authorities is considered criminal by the authorities.

As the authors of the letter remind, the authorities can consider not only opposition politicians, but also their lawyers and journalists who cover their activities to be criminals and extremists.

The petition was signed by well-known Russian journalists and media managers working in SOTAvision, Novaya Gazeta – Evropa, Mediazona, The New Times, 7×7, Deutsche Welle, and activists of human rights organizations. Collection of signatures continues.

  • SOTAvision journalist Antonyna Favorskaya (Kravtsova) was arrested in Moscow on March 29 on charges of participation in an extremist organization. This is what the Foundation for Combating Corruption, founded by Alexei Navalny, calls the consequence. Navalny’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh said that Favorskaya never cooperated with him. She herself believes that she is being judged for ordinary journalistic work. She covered the trials of Alexei Navalny and wrote about the conditions of his detention in the colony.
  • According to the presented article, Favorskaya faces up to 6 years in prison.
