Almost five thousand citizens of Russia signed a petition in support of the dismissed artistic director of the Voronezh Chamber Theater Mikhail Bychkov.

A petition calling for the return of Bychkov to the position of a hudruk was created on the morning of November 24. “We, the audience, are shocked by what happened and believe that this decision will have a devastating effect not only on the Chamber Theater, but also on the reputation of the city as a whole. The theater as it is now is a highlight of Voronezh, a place of attraction for tourists and art lovers, will not be able to exist without the ego of the creator,” the document says.

The appeal also states that the dismissal of Bychkov, whose performances have grown up in more than one generation of Voronezh residents, was accepted without taking into account the interest of the audience.

The Ministry of Culture of the Voronezh region announced the dismissal of Mikhail Bychkov on November 22. The reasons were not officially announced, but the state-owned Vesty Voronezh channel reported that Bychkov was fired because of his anti-war stance.

The head of the theater did not comment on his dismissal.

In turn, the employees of the theater addressed a collective statement to the authorities of the region, the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the presidential administration with a request to return Bychkov. Later, three leading actresses announced their departure from the theater.
