Russia’s losses in one hour of war in Ukraine exceeded losses in Afghanistan in 9 years

The number of killed Russian participants in the war in Ukraine an hour after the February invasion exceeded the official losses of the Soviet Union in the war in Afghanistan for 9 years. This follows from the updated monitoring data of “Mediazon” and the Russian service of the BBC.

According to open sources, journalists were able to confirm the death of 15,136 Russians in hostilities – we are talking not only about the military, but also about employees of other law enforcement agencies and mercenaries from “PMC Wagner.”

The data included in the monitoring are not considered complete, the real number of losses may be many times higher. Moscow and Ukraine do not disclose official death tolls.

According to Western intelligence estimates, the losses of the Russian army in killed and wounded may reach 200 thousand people – up to 60 thousand of them could die. In November, the Pentagon announced that the losses on both sides, Russia and Ukraine, presumably amount to 100 thousand people each; Washington did not comment on the doubling of estimates.

  • Head of the War Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Yury Belousov, in an interview with The Independent on the anniversary of the war, said that up to 100,000 Ukrainian civilians could die during the hostilities. The official UN estimate is about 8 thousand people. Several more people died in Russia.
