Ryanair pilots are on strike in Belgium: almost 90 flights have been cancelled

Belgian pilots of the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair on Monday began their third strike since the beginning of the summer over unsatisfactory pay conditions, which led to the cancellation of dozens of flights from Charleroi airport in the east of the country.

Because of the pilot strike in Belgium, 88 of the 340 scheduled flights of the Irish airline to Charleroi on Monday and Tuesday were canceled. Passengers were asked not to come to the airport and stay tuned for updates.

Belgian pilots are demanding that their wages be returned to pre-2020 levels of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as changes to holiday schedules. Despite consultations between Ryanair and the unions, no solution has yet been found.

“We haven’t received any acceptable offer yet. All we get are threats and illegal offers,” said Didier Lebbe, representative of the Belgian pilots’ union CNE.

According to him, the management of Ryanair is also trying to withdraw the complaint filed by some pilots against the airline. But, notes Lebbe, this is impossible, as the investigation is already underway.

Belgian pilots have already gone on strike on the weekends of July 15-16 and July 29-30. The current strike is the first to fall on a weekday, but it also takes place on the eve of the August 15 holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Belgians traditionally travel.

As with previous pilot strikes in Belgium, only Charleroi airport was affected. At Brussels Airport in the commune of Zaventem, Ryanair continues to operate flights, but only with pilots working at other airports.

In July, there was also a strike by air transport workers in Italy, as a result of which about a thousand flights were cancelled.
