Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Friday. The heads of state signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation and long-term support for Ukraine.

As reported by Vladimir Zelensky, the document stipulates support for Ukraine in the amount of more than seven billion euros for the current hour. These funds will be used to supply weapons to the warring country. Contracts with German manufacturers have already been concluded.

Also, in the agreement, Germany confirms its position regarding sanctions against Russia, the possibility of an international tribunal and the freezing of Russian assets in the Federal Republic of Germany, Zelensky clarified. The mechanism of possible emergency consultations on issues of Russian aggression in the future is described.

Later on Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and on Saturday he will go to France, where he plans to meet with its President Emmanuel Macron and also sign a new agreement on cooperation between France and Ukraine. Then Zelensky plans to take part in a security conference in Munich.

  • In July 2023, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the G7 countries promised Ukraine long-term security commitments. Great Britain became the first country of the Group of Seven to sign a corresponding bilateral agreement with Kyiv in January of this year.
  • As noted by the international media, the signing of bilateral agreements between Kyiv and partner countries can speed up Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
