In European countries, the police arrested alleged accomplices of Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist organization in the United States and the European Union. As the BBC clarifies, three people have been detained in Denmark, three in Germany and one in the Netherlands. The police suspect them of preparing an attack on Jewish institutions.
According to law enforcement agencies, among those detained are citizens of European countries, as well as citizens of Lebanon and Egypt.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Germany stated that, according to the investigation, detainees from Germany and the Netherlands planned to set up a secret weapons warehouse in Berlin, so that they could supply them to accomplices in different European countries. It is claimed that they were connected with the combat wing of Hamas – the “Al-Qassam Brigades” and received instructions from Lebanon. At the same time, for the first time they came into the field of view of the security forces last summer, before the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 of this year.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen assessed the threat of terrorism involving Hamas in Europe as “very serious”. The Minister of Justice of Denmark, Peter Hummelgaard, agreed: the alleged conspiracy is “a tragic confirmation that the Jews in Denmark are under threat,” he said. However, he said that there is still no reason to raise the official terrorist threat level.
