During the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, 101 residents of the Kemerovo region, serving in the military units of the city of Yurga, died. The number of dead was confirmed by Sibir.Realii journalists based on open sources, as well as the number of graves in the local cemetery.

Obituaries are placed on billboards in the city, as well as on a street screen near the administration building. Some of the photographs of the dead are placed on the so-called “Heroes’ Alley” in the square behind the “Pobedy” DK. Among the dead are mercenaries of PMC “Wagner”. In February 2023, according to Olga Romanova, head of the “Sitting Russia” public movement, 56 people were taken out of Yurginsk IK-41. Ten people from Yurga who went to the front are considered missing.

At the same time, the number of dead servicemen from the military units of Yurga is significantly higher, since part of the servicemen are buried in other regions. In total, according to open data, 403 servicemen from Kuzbass died in Ukraine.

The 106th Separate Material and Technical Support Brigade, the 74th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 120th Guards Artillery Brigade are located on the territory of Yurga. In May 2022, The New York Times, citing the Institute for the Study of War, reported that Russia lost 485 soldiers of the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade and more than 80 pieces of equipment when crossing the Severny Donets River in the Luhansk region.

The international volunteer group InformNapalm, as part of the OSINT investigation, found evidence that contractors of the 74th separate motorized rifle brigade (military unit 21005 of the 41st general military army – Central Military District) were in the occupied territory of Donbass and were part of the illegal armed formations of the so-called “Novorossii” during the conflict in 2014.

  • The “Russian service of the BBC” and “Mediazon” established the names of 26.8 thousand dead Russian soldiers during the invasion of Ukraine, based on open data. Meduza and Mediazona, taking into account data on excess mortality, established that Russia’s losses amounted to 47 thousand killed.
  • The Ministry of Defense hides data on losses. The last time in September 2022, the agency reported 5,937 deaths.
