On Monday, the court in Kazan ordered three days of arrest for doctor of sociological sciences and publicist Iskander Yasaveev, finding him guilty of inciting hatred due to one of the columns in Idel.Realii. According to the court and linguistic expertise, Yasaveev incited hatred towards the social group “political figures” with his text. The scientist did not admit his guilt.
Because of the arrest, Yasaveev will not be able to attend the court session on Tuesday, where he was going to appeal his dismissal from the St. Petersburg branch of the Higher School of Economics.
Doctor of sociological sciences and public activist Iskander Yasaveev has been published in Idel.Realii for several years. His articles are devoted to the sociology of Russian society. The court-reviewed column “Boy-like or Soviet-like: Why is Russia at war?” was published last summer. In it, the scientist analyzed the logic of the actions of the Russian leadership in Ukraine and the connection of this logic with the criminal culture of Soviet times.
In October 2022, Yasaveev was included in the list of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice of Russia. A few days later, the leadership of the St. Petersburg branch of the Higher School of Economics, where Yasaveev taught, fired him. Yasaveev appealed the HSE’s decision in court; the meeting on his case should take place on February 7.
- After the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, Iskander Yasaveev spoke out condemning the war and took part in anti-war pickets. In August 2022, he and several other publicists and journalists of Idel.Realia were searched.
