A number of Russian companies owned by large businessmen pay the salaries of volunteers going to war against Ukraine as part of the Russian Armed Forces. This is stated in the investigation of the “Important Histories” publication.
Among those who sponsor fighters of volunteer battalions of the Russian army – the companies of Oleg Deripaska, Leonid Mikhelson, Mikhail Gutseriev, it is confirmed in the investigation. At the same time, some of the companies in which military personnel are formally employed are not included in any sanctions lists.

Such a scheme,” one of the recruiters who recruits volunteers, in particular, for the Sokol battalion (part of the 108th Airborne Assault Regiment) told the publication. Important Histories claim that the telephone numbers that Sokol has in its the telegram indicates for those who wish to sign up for the war, they belong to the company “Rusal Management” This is a subsidiary company of “Rusal”, the main owner of which is Oleg Deripaska. Sokol fighters, thus, receive salaries from two sources – from the Ministry of Defense and from Deripaska’s structures. It is claimed that some volunteers are also officially employed in private security companies and other companies affiliated with Deripaska.
“Rusal”, from which sanctions were lifted, told “Important stories” that the company has nothing to do with the activities of voluntary organizations.
The investigation also states that volunteers for the war are sponsored by Leonid Mikhelson’s and Gennady Timchenko’s Novatek company, as well as through the under-controlled CHOP and the Muzhestvo fund. Volunteers are also paid, according to reports, and structures associated with the companies of construction magnate Sergei Gordeev and businessman Mikhail Gutseriev.
- As noted by “Vazhnye istorii”, private structures thus use the same scheme that, as previously reported, was used by the Moscow authorities and state companies: volunteers were fictitiously employed in them and sent to the front. In this way, the number of those willing to go to war increases (payments to such volunteers are significantly higher than to ordinary contract servicemen), which allows the Russian authorities to refrain from resuming mobilization at the moment.
