The Swiss government on Friday approved the allocation of 100 million francs (109 million dollars) to Ukraine for demining. The program is designed for four years: from 2024 to 2027. We are talking about humanitarian demining: demining work will be carried out not on the battlefield, but in residential and agricultural areas.

Switzerland has already provided assistance to Ukraine in this matter. In 2022-2023, it sent 15.2 million francs to the warring country, provided machines for demining. The new aid package will allow the necessary equipment to be handed over to Kyiv and the training of Ukrainian sappers.

In the statement of the Swiss authorities, it is emphasized that the demining of agricultural lands is of key importance not only for Ukraine, but also for the well-being of the whole world, which largely depends on Ukrainian agricultural production.

  • Ukraine is now one of the most mined countries in the world. About a third of its territory – 174 thousand square kilometers – needs demining work to free it from mines and unexploded ordnance. According to experts, such works will take years, if not decades.
