On Monday night, a fire broke out at the Novocherkassk GRES in the Rostov region, as a result of which two of the nine power units of the power plant were shut down. This was reported by the head of the region Vasyl Golubev.

According to him, the fire was extinguished by GRES workers. There are no casualties, the cause of the fire is being established, said the governor of the Rostov region.

Residents of Novocherkassk reported the explosions earlier. The Telegram news channel “Eto Rostov” with reference to its subscribers wrote about the flight of about two dozen drones over the region, and later – about the explosions in the area of the Novocherkassk GRES. According to the Telegram channel, smoke was visible there, and emergency vehicles drove to the power plant itself.

Later, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that 11 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the Rostov region at night.

On March 13, a drone attack caused the suspension of the Novoshakhty Oil Plant. It is the largest supplier of petroleum products in the south of Russia and the only refinery in the Rostov region.

Novocherkassk GRES is the largest thermal power plant and the second power plant in the Rostov Region after the Rostov NPP.

  • After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian regions are regularly subjected to shelling and drone attacks. The Ministry of Defense of Russia reports on the “stopping” of Ukrainian attacks and reports on downed missiles and drones over the territory of Russia. There is destruction and victims. In most cases, Kyiv does not comment on these messages.
