The City Hall of Dnipro left Brezhnev the title of honorary citizen of the city

One of the former leaders of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, was given the title of honorary citizen of the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

The state official received it back in 1979 – then the city was called Dnipropetrovsk. It was there that Brezhnev’s party career began. He himself is a native of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Mayor of Dnipro Boris Filatov explained the current decision “decommunization of the city”. At the same time, the mass media note that the petition that appeared in May calling for Brezhnev to be stripped of his honorary title under the Ukrainian law “On the Condemnation of Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) Totalitarian Regimes” collected only 40 signatures. At the time, the Dnipro administration declared that Brezhnev had died long before the law on decommunization was passed and there was no reason to deprive him of his rank.

It is not specified why the city authorities reconsidered the decision.

  • In May 2023, as part of “decommunization”, Brezhnev was stripped of the title of honorary citizen of the city of Kyiv, and in July, his bust was removed from the central Freedom Avenue of the city of Kamenskoye in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
