The Constitutional Court of France on Friday recognized the legal constitutional reform proposed by the government. According to it, the retirement age in the country will be raised to 64 years. Protests against this reform have not stopped in the country since January.
The decision of the Constitutional Court means that the government will be able to adopt an unpopular reform already next week. It may enter into force this year.
The pension reform envisages raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 years by 2030. The reform was being prepared back in 2019, but was postponed due to the mass protests of the “yellow vests” and the pandemic of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection.
According to the estimates of the Ministry of Labor of France, the reform will save almost 18 billion euros annually, thanks to which the pension system can become unprofitable by 2027. The country’s authorities insist that the later retirement of citizens is the only way to preserve the solvency of the system. Trade unions suggest introducing additional taxes for the rich or increasing payroll deductions for employers.
In mid-March, the French Senate approved the reform. A few days later, the draft law was approved by the country’s Prime Minister Elizabeth Born – bypassing the vote in the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly (the country’s constitution allows the head of government to take responsibility for the adoption of economic laws and approve them without the consent of deputies).
The government’s plans to raise the retirement age have sparked mass protests by French citizens. Rallies and demonstrations continued throughout France. In Paris, the number of protesters reached tens of thousands, across the country – more than a million. Protesters clashed with the police, set garbage cans on fire, and smashed shop windows. Polls have shown that 70% of French people are against the reform. Opposition parties demanded a vote of no confidence in Emmanuel Macron’s government.
