The first appellate court of general jurisdiction overturned the sentence of businessman Rovshan Namazov from the Yaroslavl region, who was previously convicted on charges of treason and smuggling. It is clarified that the corresponding decision was made on November 29. This was reported by “Mediazona” with reference to the press service of the court.

“Mediazona” notes that Namazov’s case is the first sentence in the case of treason in at least five years, which was canceled and sent for reconsideration.

At the beginning of September, Namazov was sentenced to 13 years in a penal colony by the Yaroslavl Regional Court. He was also sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. It is not known what exactly the entrepreneur’s change of state entails. There are also no details about the accusation of smuggling.

“Mediazona” discovered that Namazov sold engines for military equipment, such as UTD-20, B-46-6 and B-84, and various spare parts for them on “Avito”. The publication notes that in the photos posted by the businessman on the site, some engines are in factory packaging, in which they are stored in warehouses.

Namazov’s sentence was overturned due to a “substantial violation of the criminal procedure law.” The businessman’s case was sent for a new review.

  • The FSB regularly reports on the detention of treason suspects allegedly involved in the preparation of sabotage, the financing of Ukrainian troops, or the collection of information about Russian facilities. Cases against them are classified.
  • According to mass media and human rights organizations, the number of cases of treason in Russia has increased several times after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The punishment for this article was also toughened: it now carries life imprisonment.
