The court in Vladikavkaz sentenced 22-year-old Savely Frolov to six years in a high-security colony, against whom the first case of preparation for high treason was initiated in Russia. This is reported by the “First Division” project.
Frolov was also fined 100,000 rubles and restricted in freedom for two years.
Savely Frolov was detained at the end of October 2022 on the border with Georgia at the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint. According to the investigation, he tried to leave Russia in order to then fly to Ukraine and join the “Freedom of Russia” legion, which is fighting on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The reason for nominating the accused was a joking correspondence in one of the social networks. In it, Frolov discussed the war in Ukraine with his friend and jokingly announced his intention to go there.
The Legion “Freedom of Russia” supposedly exists in Ukraine and consists of Russian citizens fighting on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Ukrainian side does not confirm or deny the existence of the legion, citing secrecy. People who call themselves fighters of the “Freedom of Russia” legion have given interviews to various mass media and Internet media several times. According to Russian legislation, joining an armed formation fighting against the Russian army is tantamount to treason.
