In 2022, not a single case of escape of a prisoner or an arrested person from correctional colonies and investigative detention centers of Russia was recorded, said Arkady Gostev, director of the Federal Service for the Execution of Sentenced Persons, adding that this is the first time in modern history.

According to Gostev, the result was achieved “thanks to the coordinated actions of the FSIN personnel.”

• In the spring of last year, after several defeats by the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine, the private military company “Wagner” and its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a St. Petersburg businessman close to Vladimir Putin, began to recruit Russian prisoners into their ranks and send them to war. Convicts who agree to take part in hostilities must spend six months on the front lines, they are forbidden to retreat and surrender under the threat of execution. Those who remain alive after six months are promised freedom. Thus, about twenty thousand fighters were recruited into the PMC. Some of them have already returned to Russia and received pardons.
