“I sincerely congratulate Ajay Banga on his election as the president of the World Bank. Ajay Banga will bring to this important position the necessary leadership and management skills, experience of living and working in developing markets, as well as knowledge in the financial sphere,” said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
She noted that Banga will head the World Bank at a critical moment in its history.
“Ajay understands that the challenges ahead — from combating climate change, pandemics, and instability to eliminating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity — are deeply interconnected,” Ellen said.
What is known about the new leader
Ajay Bang was previously president and CEO of Mastercard. He was the honorary head of the International Chamber of Commerce, performing the duties of the head in 2020-2022. He is also a co-founder of the Cyber Readiness Institute and was vice-chairman of the Economic Club of New York.
