The general who commanded Russian troops in the war against Ukraine has died

The Governor of Khabarovsk Krai, Mikhail Degtyarev, reported the death of Colonel-General Gennady Zhidko. According to earlier reports, he commanded Russian troops on the front against Ukraine from May to July last year.
Zhidko was 57 years old, he had been seriously ill for some time. In the past, he participated in the Russian operation in Syria. He headed the headquarters of a group of Russian troops there. He held the post of Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia, twice was the commander of the Eastern Military District.
In May of last year, there were reports that Zhidko was appointed to command the Russian group in the war with Ukraine instead of the second general with Syrian experience, Alexander Dvornikov. There were no official confirmations of these data, since Moscow did not disclose the names of the commanders of its troops at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
General Zhidko was under the sanctions of Ukraine, the USA, the European Union and a number of other countries.
