The government proposed to unite all video surveillance systems in Russia

The Ministry of Digital Development proposed to create a unified system for storing and processing video coming from all video surveillance cameras in the country. The video stream will be processed with the help of recognition systems, which will allow people to be searched and fined for violations.

According to the newspaper “Kommersant”, the proposal is contained in the national project “Economy of data” calculated until 2023. The entire program is estimated at 1.51 trillion rubles, it is planned to spend 12 billion on the unification of video cameras. One of the newspaper’s experts suggested that the cost of the project was underestimated by 5-6 times.

There are now 1.2 million video surveillance cameras operating in Russia, according to the presentation given by the head of the ministry, Maksut Shadaev. Some of them are already connected to centralized data processing systems, but this does not apply to private cameras. The Ministry of Statistics expects that in 2030 the number of video surveillance cameras in the country will grow to 5 million, and all of them will be connected to recognition systems.

This, in particular, should increase the detection of criminals by 30 percent, it follows from the presentation of the Ministry of Statistics. Previously, video surveillance cameras were already used to catch participants in opposition rallies and detain suspects in demonstrations against the government.
