The Kremlin will not invite mass media from “unfriendly” countries to the message to the Federal Assembly, which Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to address on February 21. This was announced by the press secretary of the president Dmitry Peskov.
According to Peskov, mass media representing “friendly” countries will be accredited to the event. “Foreign mass media from unfriendly countries will not be invited there. They will have the opportunity to work while watching live broadcasts on any channel,” explained Peskov.
The Russian authorities have recognized more than 60 states as unfriendly for introducing or supporting sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This list includes the USA, EU countries, Great Britain, Canada and Japan.
In 2022, Putin did not address the Federal Assembly in violation of the Constitution of Russia. Putin explained this by the fact that “it was difficult to fix results and concrete plans for the near future at a specific moment in time.” The mass media claimed that the rejection of the message was connected with the situation at the front in Ukraine.
In addition to the message, in 2022 Putin canceled his traditional large press conference and the annual “Direct Line”, during which he answered questions from Russians.
