Roscosmos reported on Sunday that communication with the automatic interplanetary station “Luna-25” was interrupted more than a day ago. The location of the device is unknown. The corporation believes that the ship “moved into an uncalculated orbit and ended its existence as a result of a collision with the surface of the Moon.”

A day earlier, Roscosmos announced the occurrence of an “extraordinary situation” on board “Luna-25” during the transition to the pre-landing orbit, but did not reveal the details.

Roscosmos is forming an interdepartmental commission to investigate the circumstances of the station’s collapse.

The interplanetary station “Luna-25” was launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Amur region on August 11. It was the first launch of a mission to the moon in modern Russian history. The automatic station was supposed to conduct long-term research on the lunar surface. In addition, as reported by TASS, the task of “Luny-25” was to develop the technology of a soft landing on the South Pole of the Earth’s satellite.
