The Ministry of Justice plans to exclude the possibility of “sex change” in the passport

The Ministry of Justice of Russia plans to exclude the possibility of changing the gender marker in documents. This was stated by the head of the department, Konstantin Chuichenko, in an interview with TASS.

According to the minister, it is now possible to change the gender marker in the passport on the basis of a medical certificate “on sex change”, and “surgical interventions” are not required to obtain it.

“Thus, we see the following: a person who has changed gender in the passport, but physiologically remains the same, can get married, adopt children,” said Chuichenko, referring to the statistics of the registry office. According to her, since 2018, more than 2,700 Russians have changed their gender marker, and 190 of them later got married.

Chuichenko added that there are questions about which colony transgender people will be sent to if they violate the law, and from what age they should be paid pensions.

The Ministry of Justice will begin work on introducing changes to the legislation in the near future to “exclude in Russia the possibility of changing a person’s gender by simply changing documents.”

• Since December 2022, the dissemination of positive information about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism has been prohibited in Russia. Fines of up to 400,000 rubles for citizens and up to five million rubles for organizations are provided for this.
• After the adoption of the new law, bookstores and marketplaces remove books about homosexual love from sale, video services censor TV series, and the police look for transgender sex workers and bring them to court. The courts, in turn, open cases under the article on “LGBT propaganda”, impose fines and expel convicted persons from Russia.
