Journalists of the Russian Service of the BBC together with “Mediazona” and a group of volunteers managed to establish the names of 21,700 Russian soldiers who died during the invasion of Ukraine. This is 1,240 more names than two weeks ago, which is significantly higher than last year’s statistics, when on average in two weeks the names of 500-600 killed soldiers became known, the publication reports.
According to journalists, among the dead are at least 3,400 elite military specialists – GRU and Russian Guard special forces fighters, paratroopers, marines, and military pilots. It is very difficult to make up for such losses, because it takes years and millions of dollars to prepare them. The BBC managed to establish the names of 1,694 airborne troops, 625 marines, 451 Russian Guard special forces soldiers, 334 GRU special forces soldiers, 139 military pilots and 47 FSO and FSB employees.
Journalists note that 18% of the dead special forces were officers. Such losses for the Russian army may be difficult to recover. Specialists call the reason for the death of a large number of elite troops the fact that the Russian command did not use special forces fighters for their intended purpose and sent them into direct clashes.
Journalists also continue to record the high level of casualties among the mobilized. They managed to establish the names of 2001 deceased. 60% of them died in the period from January 1, 2023.
The BBC emphasizes that we are talking only about confirmed, verified data on the deaths of military personnel, and the real number of casualties may be significantly higher.
- The Ministry of Defense of Russia does not disclose data on personnel losses and does not comment on the figures reported by journalists. The authorities of Ukraine also do not report the number of dead soldiers.
- According to Western intelligence estimates, the losses of the Russian army in killed and wounded may reach 200 thousand people – up to 60 thousand of them could die.
