The number of people killed as a result of natural fires in the Kurgan region has increased to 21, and may increase, TASS reports with reference to sources in the medical services.

Earlier on Tuesday, the agency wrote about 19 dead and 13 residents who received injuries of varying degrees of severity. More than 900 people were evacuated.

In the Telegram channel of the regional government, it was reported with reference to the deputy governor of the Kurgan region, Konstantin Ermakov, that the families of those killed in the fires will be paid 1 million rubles each. Victims and residents who lost property were also promised compensation from 10,000 to 50,000 rubles.

Last week, the situation with forest fires worsened in the Urals. There are 65 wildfires in the Sverdlovsk Region, and 13 large outbreaks in the Kurgan Region on Monday. Hundreds of buildings in several settlements burned down.

A state of emergency is in effect on the entire territory of the Kurgan region. The regional management of the Ministry of Emergencies has identified more than 40 culprits of large landscape fires, the department said in a statement. According to the Investigative Committee, the officials did not take the necessary measures “to ensure safety in the upcoming fire-hazardous period.”
