The representative of the US National Security Council, John Kirby, called the Russian pilots “idiots”, as a result of whose actions the American MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle fell into the sea a few days ago.
At a briefing at the White House, Kirby was asked what he thought about the fact that in Russia the pilots involved in the incident with the drone are honored as national heroes.
The day before, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu awarded the Order of Courage to two Su-27 fighter pilots who intercepted an American drone over the Black Sea on March 14. The press service of the Ministry of Defense did not disclose the names of the pilots.
“I don’t know of a single army or air force in the world that would reward a pilot for a collision with a drone. If this is bravery, then, I think, they have another definition of this concept. It’s ridiculous and insulting,” he said. Kirby
He noted that the US does not know whether the pilot who rammed the drone acted deliberately. In the “worst case”, according to Kirba, he “maliciously put himself and American property at great risk”, in the “best case” – “just an idiot”.
Earlier, the Pentagon published a video of the incident, which shows how a Russian fighter jet flies past a reconnaissance drone and douses it with aviation fuel. The moment of the collision was not caught on video, but there is a frame in it that shows the bent propeller of the drone, apparently as a result of physical contact with the fighter. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that the fighter jets were trying to prevent the drone from entering the area off the coast of annexed Crimea, declared a restricted zone by Russia (the United States does not recognize it). At the same time, Moscow claims that the pilots did not ram the drone, but that it fell by itself “as a result of sharp maneuvering”. Officially, the USA does not declare that the Russian pilots acted deliberately, and speaks of their unprofessionalism.
