CNN reported that at least 15,000 citizens of Nepal have enlisted in the Russian army and are apparently taking part in the war against Ukraine.
According to CNN sources, Nepalese enter Russia via the United Arab Emirates or India on a tourist visa. The Russian government allegedly offers them a monthly salary of two thousand dollars and accelerated citizenship.
At the same time, according to the data of the Russian border service, although there are indeed many more Nepalese coming to the country than before, there is still no question of such a number, Mediazona writes.
In 2022, 72 Nepalese tourists entered Russia, in 2023 there were 1,039 of them, slightly less than in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic. Of them, 700 people arrived in the last three months of the year.
- At the beginning of January, the authorities of Nepal suspended the issuance of work permits to citizens in Russia and Ukraine. The government took such a decision after the death of at least 10 Nepalese recruited into the Russian army.
- Kathmandu demanded that Moscow stop the recruitment of Nepalese, and return those who have already been recruited to their homes.
- According to the calculations of the Nepalese authorities, at least 200 mercenaries can now fight on the Russian side. It is not specified whether they serve under contract in the army or are recruited into private military companies.
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal called on citizens not to participate in the war on the territory of Ukraine on either side.
